The Rachel and Jacob Bernstein Fund for Studying Abroad in Sociology

The University at Buffalo Department of Sociology is pleased to offer The Rachel and Jacob Bernstein Fund for Studying Abroad in Sociology, made possible through the generous endowment gift from Mr. Richard Seltzer, UB alumnus. This scholarship is awarded to University at Buffalo undergraduate Sociology majors who require financial assistance to fund their participation in a study abroad program. Awards are granted to reduce or fully cover the international airfare expenses for the study abroad program.

Recipients of The Rachel and Jacob Bernstein Fund for Studying Abroad in Sociology agree to fulfill a service requirement that involves assisting UB Study Abroad Programs to encourage and educate other UB students (particularly those in Sociology) about study abroad opportunities. For this reason, applicants who will return to UB upon completion of their overseas program will be given preference for this scholarship. Recipients must also provide the donor, Richard Seltzer, with a written summary of their experience abroad within one month of the official program end date.

Pending availability of funds, applications will be due October 1 (for spring study) and April 1 (for fall, academic year, or summer study).

Eligibility requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled, full-time, matriculated University at Buffalo sociology majors in good standing.
  • Applicants must have already applied for a future University at Buffalo or SUNY study abroad or exchange program.
  • Applicants must participate in the overseas academic program for full-time credit.
  • Priority will be given to first-time study abroad participants.
  • Students must have documented financial need.
  • Recipients of The Rachel and Jacob Bernstein Fund for Studying Abroad in Sociology will not be eligible to apply again.
