Application for Sociology Major

Acceptance Criteria:

Students must have completed at least three courses in sociology, including Introduction to Sociology. Applicants must have an overall 2.0 GPA in their completed sociology courses and an overall 2.0 GPA for all undergraduate courses.

Required Courses for Award of Major:

(12 credit hours with a grade of C (2.0) or better in each course)

  • Soc 101. Introduction to Sociology
  • Soc 349 Sociological Theory
  • Soc 293. Social Research Methods
  • Soc 294. Basic Statistics for Social Sciences

SSC 213 or PSY 250 may be substituted for Soc 293. Substituting for Soc 293 requires the student to take an additional sociology elective.

STA 119, PSY 207, ECO 380, CEP 207, SSC 225 or PSC 408 may be substituted for SOC 294. Substituting for SOC 294 requires the student to take an additional sociology elective.

Transfer Credit Policy:

The Sociology Department will accept up to 5 courses (15 credit hours) toward the major. Transfer courses must be approved by the Department to count toward the major; course descriptions may need to be provided to the department
