- Congratulations are in order! Elizabeth Gage's sole-authored article "Gender Attitudes and Sexual Behaviors: Comparing Center and Marginal Athletes and Non-Athletes in a Collegiate Setting" will soon be published in the academic journal, Violence Against Women. Elizabeth's article started as her master's project, for which she collected data to explore the impact of athletic participation on men's gender attitudes. Congratulations Elizabeth on a wonderful accomplishment!
- Graduate students recently presented their research at the 2007 American Sociological Association annual meeting in New York City . Yi-ping Eva Shih presented two papers: "Consuming Modernity, Consuming the West: Coffee in East Asia" and "Gender Roles, Family Expectation and Academic Life: Taiwanese Women Doctoral Students in the United States." Phil Veliz presented "The Behavior of Law: Examining Why Law Behaves Differently Across Schools."

Paulette Wydro Niewczyk ( PhD University at Buffalo 2007) is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Daemen College, Buffalo .
- Congratulations to two graduate students who recently garnered campus-wide recognition for their outstanding undergraduate instruction. Elizabeth Gage received a 2006-2007 University Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award and Phil Veliz received an Honorable Mention for this highly competitive, prestigious University award.
- Two sociology undergraduate students have been awarded the 2007/2008 Rachel and Jacob Bernstein Scholarship for Study Abroad. Catyra Polland will study at Rio Piedras in Puerto Rico and Patrick Shaver will be going to Dublin, Ireland in fall, 2007. This scholarship is made possible through the generous endowment gift from Mr. Richard Seltzer, UB alumnus.
