Student defending his master's thesisThe MA degree in Sociology is based on instruction in graduate courses and original scholarship in the form of a Master's paper written under the supervision of at least two regular Department faculty.

A minimum of 30 graduate-level credit hours is required, including 15 credit hours with at least a B grade in required theory (2 courses), methods (1 course), and statistics (2 courses) courses plus an additional 15 credit hours of graduate-level Sociology electives. First year Master's students also attend a weekly one-hour proseminar. Students are expected to maintain a grade point average of 3.2 or higher, and to meet a minimum residency requirement of 24 credit hours.

Students studying for their MA usually spend one semester doing independent research for their Master's paper and complete their program of study within two years. MA students who wish to continue in the PhD program in the Department of Sociology at UB do not continue automatically; they must apply for readmission to the PhD program.

A Master of Arts degree in Sociology prepares students for careers in teaching, government and industry, or with community organizations.
