Bio:Mary Nell Trautner does research in the areas of sociology of law; gender, sexuality, and the body; and labor and organizations. Intertwined in these strands of research are questions surrounding social inequality and social justice, particularly those about how law, culture, and organizational practices shape the ways in which inequality is created, perpetuated, and/or experienced.

Her research in progress includes analyses of how personal injury lawyers make decisions about what cases to accept; appearance-related employment discrimination lawsuits; gender and sexuality on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine; rights awareness and unionization among homeless day labor workers; living wage campaigns and new union organizing; and the intersection of gender, race, and weight in physical appearance bias.
