Spring 2009

Professor Ellen Berrey has published an article, “Sociology Finds Discrimination in the Law,” in the May 2009 issue of Contexts. This an award-winning magazine, published by the American Sociological Association, shares sociological findings with a broad audience.

Professor Kristen Schultz Lee's article, "Competition for Resources: A Reexamination of Sibship Composition Models of Parental Investment," will appear in the May issue of the Journal of Marriage and Family.

Professor Sampson Lee Blair received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching at the Celebration of Academic Excellence, held at UB's Center for the Arts on April 7. This SUNY award is granted to scholars who have demonstrated outstanding teaching ability through superb classroom performance, rigorous and innovative teaching methodology, and a superior commitment to mentorship and helping students develop their creative abilities and attain academic excellence.

Professor Steve Hoffman's article (with M. Prasad, A. Perrin, K. Bezila, K. Kindleberger, K. Manturuk, and A. Powers), "There Must be a Reason: Osama, Saddam, and Inferred Justification," will appear in the May issue of Sociological Inquiry.

Professor Steve Hoffman's article (with M. Prasad, A. Perrin, K. Bezila, K. Kindleberger, K. Manturuk, A. Powers, and A. Payton), “The Undeserving Rich: Moral Values and the White Working Class,” will appear in the June issue of Sociological Forum.

Professor Robert Adelman's article (with Charles Jaret, Ravi Ghadge, and Lesley Reid), "The Measurement of Suburban Sprawl: An Evaluation," will appear in the March issue of City and Community.

On February 20, 2008, Professor Ellen Berrey gave a talk at the University of Minnesota Department of Sociology, presenting her research about diversity ideology and diversity initiatives

 

Fall 2008

Professor Erin Hatton has just recently received a contract for her book at Temple University Press, which will be titled "The Temp Industry and the Transformation of Work in America since World War II".   Her work was the topic of a recent University at Buffalo news article.

Professor Debra Street received two awards recently—local recognition for undergraduate excellence in teaching, and a national award for scholarship in the field of social gerontology. Nominated by undergraduate students for exceptional contributions to undergraduate education at UB, Street was made an Honorary Member at the UB Chapter of the Golden Key Honour Society on November 19th at the Chapter’s annual reception for new members. Street was also inducted as a Fellow of the Society at the 63rd Annual Scientific Meeting of the Gerontological Society of America in Washington DC. Street was honored at the 2008 Behavioral and Social Sciences Business Meeting and Award Ceremony of the Society on November 23rd.  Election as a Fellow reflects peer recognition for her outstanding contributions to the field of social gerontology.

Professor Robert Granfield's article "Conceptualizing Recovery Capital: Expansion of a Theoretical Construct" appears in the November issue of Substance Use & Misuse, Volume 43 Issue 12 & 13

Professor Kristen Schultz Lee has an article in the December issue of Social Science Research (with Hiroshi Ono) titled "Specialization and Happiness in Marriage: A U.S.-Japan Comparison."

Our new faculty member Professor Ellen Berrey has an article coming out in Annual Review of Law and Social Science in December 2008 (with Robert Nelson and Laura Beth Nielsen), "Divergent Paths: Conflicting Conceptions of Employment Discrimination in Law and the Social Sciences."

Professor Ellen Berrey is on the planning committee for and will be presenting at the Discoveries of the Discrimination Research Group Conference at Stanford University in November 2008. The press conference and academic panels--sponsored by the American Bar Foundation, the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, and the Ford Foundation--will feature the latest social scientific research on discrimination.

Professor Robert Wagmiller has been invited to spend the 2008-09 academic year as a visiting research scholar at the Bendheim-Thoman Center for Research on Child Wellbeing in the Office of Population Research at Princeton University

Spring 2008

Professor Robert Granfield organized a Baldy Center for Law and Social Policy conference titled, Private Lawyers and the Public Interest: The Evolving Role of Pro Bono in the Legal Profession held last spring. This conference brought in 20 national scholars to present research on the evolving role of pro bono, the relationship between pro bono ideals and pro bono in practice, and the opportunities and limitations of pro bono in expanding access to justice.
